Minnesota DOT Traffic Management System Software Circulation
Athey Creek Consultants performed all technical activities to support the Minnesota DOT in researching approaches for circulating their in-house developed Traffic Management Center (TMC) Intelligent Roadway Information System software (IRIS) system. Athey Creek conducted a review of licensing approaches used throughout the software industry and made recommendations to the Minnestoa DOT and the Minnesota Attorney General’s office on the best approach. As a result of this project (now completed), the Minnesota DOT has decided to release their TMC software as open source software. This project has introduced the concept of Open Source software sharing among state DOTs, a concept that Athey Creek believes can help improve the sustainability of traveler information systems through shared use of software as opposed to proprietary software.
